Unable to receive email:

  • Verify that your email account has not reached its capacity limit. All folders including the folder for deleted emails count towards your account’s used space.

  • Verify that your email account has no filter set to block all incoming email.

  • Check your Junk folder for missing emails.

  • Ensure your email account has no forwarding set up. Forwarded email messages may not appear in the email account they are being sent from.

  • Ensure POP email has not been set up on an email client. When POP has been chosen as the email protocol on an email address account, emails are not stored on the mail server upon opening up the email client. They can only be accessed from the email client in configured email accounts.

  • Verify the status of your email account. Often, if an email account is left idle for a long time, the email provider deactivates and even deletes the account.

Spam is becoming problematic:

  • Limiting how long browsing history is saved for on each of the browsers on your computer could limit exposure of your email address to online bots. Cookies, browsing history and other saved information by browsers are often targeted by spammers for spam purposes.

  • Deleting browser cookies and cache in the browser’s history can eliminate resources to generate spam from. Bots on the Internet utilize browsing history of users to help generate spam. It is important to note that cookies are required by many websites for certain aspects.

How to handle spam issues:

Too much spam is coming into Inbox

  • Strengthen the spam control settings of your email account.

  • Move the junk mail to the Junk folder.

  • Report phishing scams to your email provider.

  • You can also create email filters to block specific email addresses from sending email to your email account with most email providers’ accounts.

  • Try not to open up questionable web pages.

Important emails are getting put into the Junk folder

  • Remove the email address of the sender from the block list.

  • Often, you can drag and drop the email that got into the Junk folder into the Inbox to have the email’s email address removed from the block lost.

Spam is being sent from your email address but not by yourself

  • Change your email account’s password.

  • Let those who the spam was sent to know that your account was compromised and you have changed its password.

  • Consider setting up enhanced authentication in your email account.

For spoofed emails being sent to others as a spoofed email claiming to be from yourself

  • Request a copy of the spoofed email to verify if it is being spoofed or not.

  • Tell those who got the spoofed email message to just put it into the Junk folder. Email systems would be able put spoofed emails into the Junk folder without putting the claimed sender’s emails into it.

It is important to note that server-side issues may also cause email account issues, too. When all resolution steps to resolve email account issues have been exhausted, it is best to contact Technical Support of your email service provider.
